Does My Electric Car Need a Flatbed Tow?

Yes. Most electric vehicle makers say to transport the car with all four wheels off the ground. Here's why, and what to do when your EV won't move.

Why the wheels must stay off the road

In an electric car, the wheels are connected to the motor. Turning the wheels while towing can make the motor generate power and heat, which can damage it. A flatbed keeps every wheel still.

Transport or tow mode

Most EVs have a setting that releases the parking brake so the car can be winched onto a flatbed. Tesla calls it Transport Mode. Our drivers know where to find it on common models.

When it's only the 12-volt battery

EVs still use a small 12-volt battery to run the computers and unlock the car. If it dies, the car may not unlock or shift out of park, even with a full main battery. A 12-volt boost often fixes it, and it costs much less than a tow.

What to tell the dispatcher

Your make, model and year, where the car is (including the parking level if underground), and whether the screen turns on. That lets us send the right truck.
