Car Won't Start in the Cold? Causes and Fixes

A cold Toronto morning is the most common time for a car to refuse to start. Here's why it happens and what to do.

Why cold weather kills batteries

Cold slows the chemical reaction inside a car battery, so it delivers less power just when your engine needs more to turn over. An older battery that works fine in summer often fails on the first cold morning.

Signs it's the battery

The engine cranks slowly or just clicks, the dashboard lights are dim, or nothing happens at all. If the engine cranks normally but won't fire, the problem may be fuel or ignition instead.

What you can try

Turn off the heater, lights and accessories, then try again. Wait a minute between attempts so you don't overheat the starter.

When to call for a boost

If it still won't start, call (647) 863-6271. We boost the battery with a professional jump starter and make sure the car keeps running. If the battery won't hold a charge, we can tow you to a shop.

Preventing it

Have your battery tested before winter, especially if it's more than three or four years old. Park in a garage when you can, and avoid lots of short trips that don't recharge the battery.
