Breaking down on the 401, the DVP or the Gardiner is stressful. Here's how to stay safe and get help quickly.

1. Get off the road if you can

Signal, slow down and move as far onto the right shoulder as you safely can. If you can reach an exit or a wider shoulder, keep rolling.

2. Make yourself visible

Turn on your hazard lights. At night, turn on your interior light too. If you have a reflective triangle and can place it safely, put it well behind your vehicle.

3. Stay buckled in

On a busy highway the safest place is usually inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on. Only get out if the car is at risk of being hit or catching fire, and then stand well away from traffic, behind a barrier if there is one.

4. Know if you're in a restricted towing zone

Some provincial highways in the GTA are restricted towing zones where only authorized tow companies can respond. In those zones, Ontario's guidance is to call 511 for a tow. Elsewhere, call the tow company you trust.

5. Call for a tow

Call Angar Towing at (647) 863-6271. Tell the dispatcher the highway, your direction, the nearest exit or kilometre marker, and your vehicle. We'll confirm the price and send the closest truck.
